Managing Taxonomies
Taxonomies are a way to classify listing profiles, essentially organizing them into different categories or groups. Utilizing taxonomies can enhance features and broaden the reach of your directory.
To view all taxonomies available in a directory, you can go to ACF > Taxonomies
Here are two key definitions you need to know:
- Taxonomy: This includes ‘cities‘, ‘business category‘, ‘business highlights‘, etc.
- Taxonomy Term: For example, in the ‘city‘ taxonomy, terms like ‘New York‘, ‘Los Angeles‘, ‘Buffalo‘, etc., are included.
By default, we’ve included 80 business types and other taxonomy terms to define and filter businesses. If you want to add, delete, or modify any taxonomy, simply hover over to the custom post types from your WordPress dashboard (Listings or Events) and select the taxonomy you want to work with. From there, you can add, edit, or remove the terms as needed.
Note: Only add new business categories if they are not already covered by existing synonyms. For example, if the directory already includes ‘Plumbers’, do not add variations like ‘Plumber’ or ‘Plumbing Contractor’.
Adding duplicate or similar categories can create confusion for users and make the directory appear cluttered. It also complicates navigation and search functionality, making it harder for businesses and customers to find what they need efficiently.
